How to get a car in NZ: Tips for dummies!

So, now you get some advices how to get a car in NZ, if you happen to need one. Finally something important and useful in my blog! ^_^

And sorry guys, but this text I won't translate into Finnish. If you are going to buy a car in NZ, I assume that you can speak and read English (even my tourist English)!

1. Buy a car!  

Well that's just easy..or is it? If I bought the last car because it was green and the registration plate started with RIH...So maybe I'll need some help for buying the car.

You may have to do a pre-inspection to your car before buying it and also check from Vehicle Information Report (VIR) that car that you are buying is not stolen or have any money owing etc.

And also you might want to buy a nice van or station wagon, so you can sleep in a car and don't have to pay for the hostels.  

If you thought that all you need to do is to have enough money to buy a car...WRONG! Check out the next steps! ;)

2. WOF

This means Warrant of Fitness. You need this, so you know that your car is working or you hope it's working. It is the regular check for the car (tyres, brakes etc.). It depends how old your car is, that if you have to do that every 6 or 12 months or once in every three years. Buy a car that has a WOF and if you need car for a short time, buy a car that has a long time until next WOF inspection. 

3. Registration = licensing

We have spoken all the time about registration, but now I learned that licensing is often incorrectly called registration. But the licensing means that you pay 3, 6 or 12 months fee to use your car on public roads. 

For example licensing for 6 months cost about 150 $.

And interesting fact about the cars in NZ (I'm a bit shocked about this, because population in NZ was about 4,43 million in 2012.)

4. Insurance

I think it's not compulsory to have a car insurance in NZ, but maybe it's good to take at least the third party insurance. "Third Party insurance is not about protecting your car. It's about protecting yourself in case you accidentally damage someone else's car." 

We asked insurances from two places. State insurance and AA. This time AA won. We got not just the third party insurance, but also theft, fire, repairing our own car for almost the same price. Annual insurance was a little bit less than 300 $ that means 150 $ for 6 months. 

You can also get the AA Membership for 59/79$ or Plus Membership 59/79$ +49$. This means that you have free maps and other benefits and what's most important Road Rescue Service. If your car explode in the middle of nowhere they will pick you and your car from there.

5. Take good care of your car

We most likely need our car for 6 months and after that sell that to next vollies or someone else. So when you have paid for the car it would be nice to have some money back when you try to sell it. It's easier to check the oil, water and take it to the garage for small repair than lose 1000 $ or 2000$ or even more. Nobody wants to buy broken car...

As you can see, you need more money than just money for the car and you have more things to do than just choose and pay the car. I hope that this will help you when you're buying car in NZ. And please remember that this is not maybe the list that include all you need to know and do. But I would have needed something like this at the beginning. Now me and Gwladys are experts when it comes to get a car in NZ. ;)

Leirielämää ja kiwislangia/ Camp life and kiwi slang at the O-week

Heipä hei kaverit täältä Aotearoasta eli Uudesta Seelannista!
 
Lentokone starttasi kohti maapallon toista laitaa keskiviikkona 23.7. klo 17:05. Päästiin onneksi Ellin ja Essin kanssa vierekkäisille paikoille. Muuten tunnelma olisi ollut vähän liian kiinalaisvoittoinen. Lentokoneeseen noustessa olo oli kuin Niko Kivelän stand up-pätkässä Air China. Ensimmäinen lento kesti noin 9h ja sitten oltiinkin Shanghaissa. Yllätys oli melkoinen, kun meidän pitikin ottaa laukut ulos ja tehdä uusi check-in. Saatiin siis päivän viisumi Kiinaan. Seitsemän tuntia meni suhteellisen nopeasti (varsinkin kun osan ajasta vedin sikeitä pitkin penkkejä) ja käytiin lentokentän ovelta haistelemassa myös ilmaa Kiinassa (mikä oli ihan järjettömän kosteaa ja kuumaa)! Virallisten papatusten jälkeen, Kiinan leimat ja viisumit passissa päästiin jatkamaan seuraavalle lennolle: Air New Zealand ja Auckland. Lennon alussa oli ehkä paras näkemäni turvallisuusvideo. Tyyppi seikkaili pitkin Uuden Seelanin luontoa ja turvellisuusohjeet turvavöistä happinaamariin käsiteltiin koskien pauhussa tai vuoren rinteillä. Lento lähti tunnin myöhässä ja koneessa istumista kertyikin muhkeasti reilut 12h. Mutta ONNEKSI koneessa näytettiin Game of Thronesin 4. kausi!!! Olis voinut nukkuakin, mutta arvatkaa katoinko kaikki jaksot? :'D Hauska bussikuski vei meidät hieman pidemmän kiertotien kautta leirikeskukseen. Matkalla kävimme pyörähtämässä vaikka missä paikoissa mm. Matamatassa eli ns. The Hobbitonissa, josta ei ole pitkä matka varsinaiseen Taru sormusten herrasta hobittikylään.

Tarkempi sijainti ensimmäisellä viikolla Uudessa Seelannissa oli Rotorua, Tui Ridge Camp. Leirikeskus sijaitsee noin 15-20min ajomatkan päässä Rotoruasta. Leiriltä löytyy kaikenlaisia elämysaktiviteetteja, joita mekin pääsimme kokeilemaan. Viikon aikana tuli mm. suunnistettua, rymyttyä metsässä,keinuttua big swingissä, kiipeiltyä korkealla köysissä, kuunneltua monen monta luentoa ACVE:en/vapaaehtoistyöhön liittyen sekä osallistuttua ESOL- kielikurssille. Kielikurssilla mutusteltiin kiwislangia, kiwiruokia ja kiwikulttuuria ylipäätään. Ohjelma oli melko tiukka, joten oli ihan hyvä, että saavuttiin leirikeskukseen pari päivää ennen ohjelman alkamista. Sai vammailla ja lepuutella jetlagit ihan rauhassa. :) Leirillä oli porukkaa mm. Saksasta, Norjasta, Tanskasta, Islannista, Taiwanista, Costa Ricasta, Ecuadorista ja USA:sta. Suurin osa leirin osallistujista oli juuri lukiosta valmistuneita ja keski-ikä leirillä oli ehkä 19-20v. Meitä ns. ikäloppuja oli muutama. Meidät jaettiin myös Kiwi- ja Tui-joukkueisiin ja kilpailimme keskenämme eri tehtävissä. Viimeisenä meillä oli jalkapallo-ottelu, jonka me Kiwit voitimme huippulukemin! JES! Illalla olikin sitten hyvä lähteä juhlistamaan voittoa Rotoruan keskustaan loppubileisiin Lava baariin.

NZ volunteers 2014

Seuraavana aamuna oli lähtö kohteisiin jo kukonlaulun aikaan (eli aivan liian aikaisin)! Lisäksi mulla ja Gwladysilla olisi oikeasti ollut vain noin tunnin matka puistoon, mutta meille oli varattu bussiyhteydet Hamiltonin ja yhden bussinvaihdon kautta. Tunnin matkaan menikin sitten lopulta nelisen tuntia. Taurangasta meidät haki rannalla työskentelevä Park Ranger ja myöhemmin pääsimme kauppaan varsinaisen pomomme Garyn kanssa.

Illalla paikallinen yhdistys ja tree society pitivät juhlia viereisessä kahvilassa ja meidätkin oli kutsuttu sinne. Yhdistys oli nähnyt paljon vaivaa puiston kunnostamisen eteen ja ollut monesti napit vastakkain kaupunginjohdon kanssa ja nyt he halusivat juhlistaa saavutuksiaan. Tunnelma oli hyvin lämminhenkinen. Vasta puistoon pölähtäneenä ja kaikesta uudesta häkeltyneenä small talk ja mix&mingle ei ehkä ihan mennyt putkeen. :D Kuitenkin jäi olo, että olimme hyvin tervetulleita! :)

Ensimmäisiä huomioita Uudessa Seelannissa:

• KEEP LEFT! Eli vasemmanpuoleinen liikenne. (Ps. voi iskeä pieni paniikki, kun ekan kerran auton ratissa!)
• Talot on pienia ja matalia, infrastruktuurista tulee mieleen mm. True Blood.
• Paljon peltoja, lampaita, lehmiä. Eläimet on porrastaneet kukkuloiden rinteet hauskasti syödessään ruohoa.
• Saniaispuut. Metsässä tuntuu, että dinosaurus voisi tulla vastaan hetkenä mnä hyvänsä. Jurassic park! :D
• Ihan überystävällisiä ihmisiä!
• Fantail ensimmäinen huvittava lintuyksilö

Eläimistä ja linnuista puheenollen, tästä alkaa Riinan luontonurkka:

Ensimmäisenä kunnian luontonurkassa saa  fantail eli pīwakawaka. Se on peruspikkulinnun kokoinen, ehkä itsellä tulee mieleen hieman västäräkki olemuksesta. Pieni ja energinen lintu lekottelee perhosmaisesti ilmassa ja uskaltautuu hyvinkin lähelle ihmistä. Luin jostain, että se saattaisi tulla jopa kädelle istumaan. Lekottelun tarkoituksena on lähinnä kai hämätä kauemmaksi pesästä. Ei voi kuitenkaan kieltää, etteikö olisi hauskaa ja kiehtovaa, että pikkulintu tulee ihan viereen kurkistelemaan. 
Lintu on yleisimpiä natiivilintuja Uudessa Seelannissa. Ja se on erittäin helppo tunnistaa lentotyylista ja pitkästä pyrstöstä, joka aukeaa viuhkaksi. Jos maorinkielistä nimeä on vaikea muistaa, niin miettikää pissivää Shakiraa (Pee, Waka waka). Ja nyt te kaikki muistatte tämän pienen tirppiäisen, joka vei ainakin minun huomioni ensimmäisellä aamukävelyllä leirikeskuksella.

Kia ora from Aotearoa!

Here's again some part on my blog translated into a tourist english! ;D
I left to New Zealand (NZ) on Wednesday 23.7. with two other Finnish girl. It was really good that we booked seats next to each other. Otherwise it would have been a long 9 hours in the middle of all the Chinese people, when you don't understand anything what they are talking! :D We had to change flights in Shanghai and done new check-in. We waited 7 hours there for the next plane. We got 24 hours Visas to China and we went for a little walk outside the airport. But the air was so hot and moist that we didn't survive that long outside! :'D After that started about 11 hours flight to NZ. Flight was an hour late. Air New Zealand has mayde the funniest safety instrucions ever! On the video some guy is adventuring around NZ nature and they show for ecample how to open an close your seat bealt in the middle of the NZ nature! So cool! I was thinking that I will sleep a lot during the flights, but what happened? I found the 4. season of Game of Thrones and I had to watch all the episodes! Elli and Essi were just laughing to me. :D

First week went fast in the O-week in Tui Ridge, Rotorua. We had lessons about ACVE and volunteering in NZ and ESOL English language/Kiwi slang and culture. The they divided us to Kiwi's and Tui's. We had different competitions and activities during the O-week. Activities included for example: orienteering, big swing, high ropes, group tasks (survival track)... And last day we had final soccer match that we Kiwis won!! GO KIWI! :D And also last evening we had final party in Rotorua Lava Bar. In the O-week we had people from Germany, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Taiwan, Costa Rica, Ecuador and USA. Most of the volunteers were about 18-20 years old and just graduated from high school. But there were also me and few other little bit older volunteers.

Next morning after the parties we left too early in the morning to our projects. Me and Gwladys had only one hour travel to Tauranga, but our bus connection went through Hamilton, where we had to change bus. So we had about 4 hours sightseeing on the way to Tauranga. First day in the park we went shopping some food and in the evening tree society and local community had a small party in the nearby cafe. They were celebrating all that they had done for developing the park and areas close to park. Atmosphere was very warm and welcoming. We tried also mix & mingle and have a little small talk, but I don't know how well that went. But after that I felt realy good about the park and working here next 6 months. 

Some notices tha I have made at first days:

• KEEP LEFT when driving!
• Houses are small and low. They remind me of True Blood. :D
• Lots and lots of fields, sheep, cows..
• Firm trees...and when you walk in a forest it feels like you are in Jurassic park (but not in a scary way!)
• People are SOOOOO friendly and funny.
• Fantail was the first funny bird that I saw.

I will start also new part in my blog. Riina's naturecorner.
First I present you fantail/ pīwakawaka. It's a small very common native bird here in NZ. It flies little like a butterfly and it could be very friendly and come very close to you. But it really just want you far away from its nest.It has a long tail that opens up as a fan. More information you'll find from the link above. ;)
